Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as to the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination, and violence. Peer-reviewed health literature indicates that people with Spina Bifida have varying levels of satisfaction with their sex lives, with approximately half reporting dissatisfaction with their sex lives. Sexual activity in people with Spina Bifida is delayed. The receipt of sexual education, especially as it relates to Spina Bifida, has been found to be inadequate in multiple studies. Both young men and young women wanted more information from their health care providers especially about sexual education specific to living with Spina Bifida. There also needs to be more sexual counseling for people with Spina Bifida in order to increase their sexual satisfaction and quality of life. It is important to provide people with Spina Bifida with opportunities to acquire relevant and accurate knowledge about sexual health, and to develop and implement skills to negotiate sexual desire, intimacy, and activity.

As a result, more males with SB are reaching sexual maturity and transitioning from pediatric to adult urologists. These individuals are in need of urologic care. Research relating to sexual health in this population is lagging, and issues regarding sexuality, erectile dysfunction ED and treatment, fertility, and paternity need to be addressed to better care for and advise these patients. Sexual education is delayed in these patients compared with peers without SB. ED is a clear problem in males with SB. Erections appear to be dependent on the level of the spinal lesion; men with lesions below T10 have markedly higher erection rates Br J Urol. Fortunately, males with SB appear to respond to conventional ED management.

Skip to content. I have been friends with a guy who has spina bifida for a while now, and recently, things took a turn for the better — we are just starting a relationship. I know that he has sensation below his waist, and can get an erection, but I wondered if there is anything about how his disability will affect our sex life. I am anxious for it to be pleasing for both of us, and although we are open enough for me to ask him questions, I would like to go in prepared so to speak! Is there anything that will be able to help me in making sure that the first time for us won't be awkward, uncomfortable or downright crap?! You deserve to be commended for taking such a mature approach to your budding relationship! Spina bifida SB or no SB, responsible and caring sexual partners take time to talk through difficult issues, such as preferences and expectations. Rest assured that it is totally possible to create a mutually enjoyable sex life with a partner with SB.
I have spina bifida and had virtually given up on finding a man to have a relationship with — but then it happened! Unfortunately we never managed full sexual intercourse as I found it too painful. When he tried to get inside me it was like there was a dead end. He has since left me. I then met up with someone else who inserted his finger to pleasure me and he also commented that it felt like a dead end. Is this because I am still a virgin? I have always been worried about having sex for some reason and now I feel frustrated that I can't enjoy it. When I was younger I was never encouraged to use tampons.
